Diary of a shoe whore: Look Before You Jump

jump-shoes4

When I asked the saleswoman to bring me the spectator flat, she didn’t know what I was talking about. “The black and white shoe,” I smiled – she knew it by another name, the style name, ‘Muse’. Maybe that was because Jump Shoes prides itself on not being conventional by creating chic, yet comfortable shoes made for walking or perhaps jumping, not for lounging or being a spectator. But by the looks of the style name, ‘Muse’ was designed to be inspirational.

Located 89 Spring St. in New York’s Soho, Jump Shoes, took a leap from its Taiwanese beginnings, in 1975, to its current international expansion. The Soho store was created to help raise their brand from the depths of its American obscurity to the levels of fame it has experience in more than 30 countries. But the promise of a strong brand was not the reason why I walked into their flagship store -- it was their sale as most of their shoes, which normally retailed around $90.00, were more than 50% off. Once in the store, I was happy to discover that Jump shoes were not just fashionable, they also seemed to mold to my feet, qualities that have only been mastered by very few shoe companies.

Honestly, I never heard of the brand until I spotted their spectator-esque shoes in the window, which seemed heaven sent at the time, since I had been scouring most of Manhattan looking for the perfect shoe for spring. And while it was not the ballet flat I had envisioned myself buying (after spending the weekend watching “Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ for the millionth time), my spectator flat exceeded my expectations in leaps and bounds.
