In the colorful world of home décor, black and white reined supreme for the Brussels home furnishings market. It is hard to imagine how a city consistently caught between retro Danish designs and fru-fru French antiques, has discovered their inner mod. Gilles Van Der Brempt’s tile wall hanging “belles” showed us a glimpse into this world. His basic shapes translate into more than just fashion silhouettes. If his creations could speak it would sound like sidewalk chatter and if they had a soundtrack it would fill a smoky jazz club.
But who is this mystery man? He didn’t show up to the opening or maybe he was there lurking in the shadows eavesdropping on spectators conversation-- leaving his works to speak for him. And it left me wondering how one could adapt his works of art in their bathroom. Black, white and an accent color? -- how Belgian chic.
