Dairies of a Shoe Whore: Cheering for Chie

I wish I lived in the inspiration for Chie Mihara’s shoe collection. Her whimsical design style is integrated into everything from flip flop to ankle boot. Maybe it’s the sun drenched plains of the south of Spain that gives her shoes their cheerful disposition. Drenched in New York smog, it is good to know that happiness is available for approximately $329 at the nearest Anthropologie or Neiman Marcus.

Mihara’s collection, like many designers, is a reflection of her life. Born to Japanese parents, raised in Porto Alegre, Brazil (literal translation ‘happy point’), Mihara lived in both Japan and New York, before settling in the Alicante, Spain. In her career she learned two important things: 1) women like styles not easily duplicated 2) comfort really should apply to more than Birkenstocks. So when she branched out on her own, she managed to create a product that gets all the ‘ooh’s and aah’s’, while maintaining a ‘wear-time’ of more than five minutes. And unlike wearing the masochistic, pointy, four-inch heels, you don’t have to survey a venue looking for a place to ‘cop a swat’ because your feet are killing you.
